Coco Chanel 1883–1971 • French designer Gabrielle Coco Chanel created clothes to empower women, with pieces both chic and comfortable. When rival Christian Dior marked the end of World War II rationing with his New Look—all flounces and voluminous skirts—the impracticality of the designs appalled her; she derided him as “a man who doesn’t know women.” In 1954, Chanel parried by coming out of retirement at 71 to launch a new line. Her comeback was a success—but she’d never really gone away. The legendary Chanel suit, introduced in 1925, remains a classic to this day.
