The Key Corporation has kept Westfall safe from pandemics for the last fifty years. But that's not all they've done ...

After discovering the shocking truth behind the Key Corporation, nurse Elodie and misfit Aiden have managed to escape in search of New Dawn—the stronghold for the Eos resistance movement. There, they can fight for a better world, one where everyone can make their own futures.

But things aren't always as they seem, and as they navigate the tricky paths between perception and reality, freedom and fighting for survival, the two young rebels must discover who they can trust, even as they learn more about who they really are ...

And change also comes at a cost.

Grades 9-12 At the end of The Key to Fear (2020), Aiden and Elodie were shocked by revelations about the Key Corporation and the Eos resistance movement. This installment picks up with the pair on the run and in search of New Dawn (the resistance's stronghold), where hopefully a better future awaits them. Unfortunately, reaching New Dawn is not easy, and Aiden and Elodie encounter deception and unexpected obstacles. Meanwhile, Aiden's sister, Blair, is MediCenter's new director, but her position and ambitions are threatened as strict leaders try to unseat her and implement their own set of ideas for shaping the future. While the first book focused on introducing characters and dystopian world building, this title contains more action and character development. As the plot moves forward, readers also get to know council leader Preston Darby, an evil entity eager to destroy Blair. Full of excitement, wicked elements, and fantastical storytelling, this sequel will satisfy those who dug the first volume of The Key series.

A return to the dystopian world in which the evil Key Corporation keeps the world safe from a deadly virus--and its citizens under heavy control. After momentous events that led Aiden and Elodie to discover the truth behind the Key Corporation and unveil the leader of the Eos resistance movement, they are on the run and in search of New Dawn, an idyllic stronghold where a bright, hopeful future awaits. But before they can reach their destination, Aiden and Elodie get caught in a new web of lies and deception. Meanwhile, Blair, Aiden's ambitious sister who is now MediCenter's new director, sees her own once-bright future become uncertain when she too starts to reevaluate her life just as the corporation's leaders work on a new plan to further exert their authority. This second entry in Cast's The Key series sees the focus move away from shaky, credulity-stretching dystopian worldbuilding to mostly concentrate on Blair's, Aiden's, and Elodie's growth as people, touching on agency, identity, and grief. The trio share the narrative with Council Leader Preston Darby, a psychopath obsessed with Blair and a clichd embodiment of the wickedness of the authoritarian government. The book's second half changes gear, moving toward a rushed and unearned climax and bringing the central storylines to a fizzled close. Main characters are brown skinned; Preston reads as White. Strictly for those who enjoyed the first book in the series. (Dystopian. 14-18)
