A Wisconsin bookstore owner and cryptozoologist is asked to investigate a series of deaths that just might be proof of a fabled lake monster in this first installment of a new mystery series by USA Today bestselling author Annelise Ryan.
Morgan Carter, owner of the Odds and Ends bookstore in Door County, Wisconsin, has a hobby. When she’s not tending the store, she’s hunting cryptids—creatures whose existence is rumored, but never proven to be real. It’s a hobby that cost her parents their lives, but one she’ll never give up on.

So when a number of bodies turn up on the shores of Lake Michigan with injuries that look like bites from a giant unknown animal, police chief Jon Flanders turns to Morgan for help. A skeptic at heart, Morgan can’t turn down the opportunity to find proof of an entity whose existence she can’t definitively rule out. She and her beloved rescue dog, Newt, journey to the Death's Door strait to hunt for a homicidal monster in the lake—but if they’re not careful, they just might be its next victims.

Wisconsin bookstore owner and cryptozoologist Morgan Carter is successfully brought to life by narrator Susan Bennett. Morgan's sideline is hunting cryptids, creatures of unproven existence, such as Bigfoot. When police chief Jon Flanders turns to her for help solving the mystery behind a series of bodies found with injuries apparently caused by a lake monster, she accepts the challenge with enthusiasm. Bennett gives a strong performance, creating a likable protagonist in Morgan while highlighting both her strength and vulnerability, along with her quirky nerdiness and ability to not take herself too seriously. Bennett's characterizations of the male characters are particularly strong, especially her believable portrayal of Jon. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

Morgan Carter owns a curiosity shop/bookstore in Door Count, WI. She deals in macabre and unusual oddities, from mummies to hair balls to rare books. She is also a cryptozoologist, a scientist who looks for creatures only rumored to exist--Bigfoot, swamp monsters, the Loch Ness Monster, and the like. When police chief Jon Flanders contacts her about finding a possible lake monster that has (perhaps) killed two people, she is all in. Clearly, this investigation is touching a nerve in the community, however, for as Morgan digs into the crimes, she receives several violent warnings that she should mind her own business. Undaunted, she employs her own collections and local experts to explore the possibilities, unearthing rumors of shipwrecks and sunken treasure in the process. Susan Bennett gives a warm and lively performance, creating distinct voices for the characters and perfectly capturing the upper Midwestern setting. VERDICT Ryan's ("Mattie Winston" mystery series) latest provides readers with a light, yet captivating story, which will keep listeners guessing until the end. Highly recommended for all cozy mystery collections.--Joanna M. Burkhardt
